Plastic has become ubiquitous in our lives, but there can be no doubt it is harming the planet. Eco guilt is a real thing and it’s much better to do something about it rather than just feel awful. Following are easy everyday steps we can take at home to reduce plastic use and help our planet.
Here are ten tips to get you going:
BYOC (Bring your own containers): This one feels a little weird, but you don’t have to use disposable plastic packaging on takeout food, or in the grocery store. Bring your own containers. Most stores and restaurants will be happy to try it out.
Go for Plastic-Free Packages: When shopping online, purchase products from companies that use plastic-free packaging or offer minimal packaging.
Forgo Plastic Bottles: Buying millions of plastic water-bottles every year is convenient but not so friendly to the environment. A quick fix is to carry your own water bottle made from stainless steel or glass instead of buying the ones in supermarkets or stores.
Say No to Plastic Straws: Plastic straws pollute our land and oceans and are ingested by marine and aquatic life. Invest in a set of good reusable stainless steel or bamboo straws or order your drink without a straw if you are dining out.
Invest in Reusable Shopping Bags: You can replace single-use plastic bags with reusable shopping bags made of cloth or sturdy materials such as canvas. Keep a couple in your car or by the front door so you’ll always remember to take them along whenever going to the store.
Glass or Metal Containers: If you’re storing foods or leftovers, opt for glass or metal containers over plastic. Glass and metal are easier to recycle and can be easily recycled or repurposed. Plus, they do not leach harmful plastics into your food or water.
Bulk-Buy: When it comes to products like grains, nuts and spices, buy them in bulk and bring your own reusable containers or sacks to the shop for filling. This will eliminate the need for relying on individual packaging for such items.
Refuse Plastic Options On Traditional Bathroom Products: There are other options to take the place of plastic for everyday items like toothbrushes, razors, combs, or hair brushes. There are bamboo toothbrushes, stainless steel razors and wooden combs, or hair brushes.
Make Your Own Household Cleaning Products: So much of your domestic cleaning products come in plastic bottles, plus many of them contain toxins so why not make your own? Vinegar, bicarbonate of soda, essential oils and lemon can be used for a multitude of household issues. This is kinder to the environment and also safer for your family. My personal favorite is Clove, Lemon, Cinnamon Bark, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary oil cleaner in a glass spray bottle.
When you find others, who share in the endeavor of making changes to our lifestyles, cumulatively, we will make a big different for the planet. These very easy tips will cut your plastic footprint massively. By starting now, you will leave a friendly planet for your children and grandchildren. Every little action count, so don’t delay.
